Overview
This is another of my dad’s expensive Macallans I bought him, but this time at a relatively (compared to the Macallan Gran Reserva 1982 review a few weeks ago) cheap £180 a bottle, we got to taste this one!
Given its 16 years old and was started in 1991 I’m guessing I bought this for Christmas 2008. Back then I probably paid £50-60 but as with all unusual Macallans, it’s shot up in value. The photo does point to the fact my dad has had it for nearly 10 years without opening it 😕
Murray McDavid has a long tradition of bottling quality whiskies, but even by their standards, this is a bit special. Bottled at Bruichladdich the cask was chosen by the great distilling legend, Jim McEwan and limited to a thousand bottles.
| Colour | Nose | Palate | Finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slightly stewed tea | Heavy with toffee, raisins, stewed pears with some buttery shortbread | Quite oily, with a nuttiness, moving to a sweet buttered toffee. Saltiness too? | Long and elegant, more stewed pears and figs. |
Conclusion
I don’t know if it’s the Bruichladdich blue top or my imagination, but there’s a tinge of smoke and saltiness to this whisky, which I like.
Not truly outstanding, but a bloody good Macallan with only a slight lack of complexity stopping it being a great Macallan, but it’s very easy drinking and packed with sweet, rich, raisiny flavours.
